Electrical questions, answered plainly
The things Florida homeowners and business owners actually ask us, without the sales pitch.
General questions
How much does an electrician cost in Florida?
We quote a flat price per job rather than an hourly rate, so what you agree is what you pay. Small work is priced per device, larger work is priced per scope once we have seen it. Anything urgent gets the after-hours cost included in the number up front.
Why does my breaker keep tripping?
A breaker doing its job is telling you the circuit is overloaded or faulted. If it trips under a specific load, the circuit is the problem. If it trips with nothing plugged in, the breaker itself is usually failing. Repeatedly resetting a tripping breaker is the one thing not to do.
Why do my lights flicker?
Most often a loose connection somewhere on that circuit, frequently at a backstabbed receptacle. Sometimes it is a failing breaker or, if the whole house dims, a loose neutral at the service. Loose connections generate heat, so flickering is worth chasing rather than living with.
Is a warm outlet or switch dangerous?
Treat it as urgent. Heat at a connection means resistance, and resistance is how electrical fires begin. Switch off that circuit and call us.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
Most of one day, with power off for a good part of it. We stage as much as possible before the utility pulls the meter to keep the dead time short.
Do I need 200 amp service?
If you run central air, an electric range, a dryer, a pool pump or an EV charger, 100 amp service is tight. The load calculation gives a real answer for your house rather than a rule of thumb.
Can I install an EV charger on my existing panel?
Often yes. It depends on spare capacity, not just spare breaker slots. Where capacity is tight, load management is usually cheaper than a full service upgrade.
What is wrong with Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels?
Both have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip under fault conditions. Many insurers now ask for them to be replaced, and they are one of the most common panel changeouts we do.
Do I need to rewire my whole house?
Not always. Aluminium branch circuits can often be remediated at the connections instead of pulled out. Knob and tube and crumbling cloth wiring usually do need replacing. An inspection tells you which situation you are in.
Why do my hardwired smoke alarms chirp with new batteries?
Usually one failed unit dragging the whole interconnected chain, or alarms past their ten-year life. Replacing the expired units fixes it.
Do you charge to come out and quote?
Quotes for planned work are free. Diagnostic visits for faults carry a fee, and that fee comes off the repair if you go ahead with it.
How fast can you get to an emergency?
Same day for most emergency calls, often within a few hours. You get a real arrival window on the phone, not a promise to call back.
Do you work on weekends and holidays?
Yes. The line is answered 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and crews run outside business hours as standard rather than as a favour.
Can you work around my business hours?
Most of our commercial work happens at night, early morning or on closed days, specifically so trading is not interrupted.
Why did half my outlets stop working at once?
Usually a tripped GFCI upstream protecting the whole run, or a failed connection in one receptacle breaking the chain to everything downstream.
Do you install generators and coordinate the gas work?
Yes. We size the unit to your real load, install the pad and the automatic transfer switch, and coordinate the natural gas or propane connection.
